January 15th Bahia Chamela ( the propane adventure)

Yesterday I was making breakfast and we ran out of propane, half way thru cooking the omelets. So we turn on the BBQ and I finished. The adventure of the day was to go get propane. The closed plant is in tomatlam, about 40 minutes by car. I flagged down a panga and asked them if the new where I could get propane. What happens in this town in the Propane truck come by with large bottles in a flat bed truck you just do a swap? They have no way of filling smaller bottles. I proceeded to ask my panga fisherman what is the best way to get to the plant. They offer to take me for 200 pesos. So Fidel can Isidro came back for me in an hour and off we went.

First of all Isidro is about 20 years old and so is his little Nissan sentra. I think max speed we got in the car was about 40 MPH. Oh I forgot we needed gas so we put 90 pesos of gas in the car (check out the gas station picture it is hut with 5, 10, 20, and 55 gallon drums, which of course is manned by a girl and had the required “girlie’ calendar on the wall. Then off we went, an hour later we are at the plant. It was a whole 95 peso to fill my tank. On the return trip we stopped for tacos, to check out tires for his Nissan, exchange spark plugs (may as well urn errands). From what I am told a taxi charges 1000. (MN) peso for what we did for 200. So all in all we had quite an adventure, and spent 470 ( 37.50 US) pesos for 10 kilograms of propane ( or your typical BBQ grill sizas) of propane.

So, all in all anything can be found with a little patience. Isidro informed me i should stay here in Chamela an open a school. They want to learn how to talk to the tourist. I could make a whole 4000. MN per week with 15 student 2 hrs a day ( that is less than 400.00 US per week of those you un sure) That is quite an offer but I will have to pass for now.

  1. Great story Elizabeth...we enjoyed it a lot. We've been to Chamela many times but...fortunately...never had to get propane there. That's one of those "adventures" that would have left me frustrated all day! Sorry you guys have to come home so quick. It's cold up here! Best...Rennie & Anne
